The project is part of the Road Safety Plan adopted by Autovie Venete in order to deal with emergency situations in motorway traffic. One of the aims of the Plan is to reduce the number of accidents.
To this end overseeing compliance with speed limits has proved an effective measure. For this reason Autovie Venete has equipped its

A list of speed check points is available online at

The data acquired are treated in accordance with privacy regulations, ensuring their integrity, confidentiality and their use exclusively for the purposes required by the system.
Motorists are invited to drive safely at all times, to comply with the Highway Code, and to adjust their driving speed to traffic and weather conditions as well to the conditions of both the vehicle and the driver.
The speed limit on all Italian motorways is generally 130 km/h unless otherwise stated, 110 km/h in case of rain.
The Safety Tutor System allows speeding sanctions to be issued automatically and do not require the actual presence of Traffic Police on the motorway.
The vehicles’ average speed is monitored in all lanes over long sections of the motorway – generally 10 to 25 km in length – or using speed traps positioned at specific locations where accidents occur more frequently.
The system is operational under all weather conditions (fog, rain, etc) day and night. It can detect vehicles travelling with their lights off or in the emergency lane, two occurrences that put the safety of other motorists at risk, for which sanctions are particularly severe.
The Safety Tutor System functions independently from the Telepass ® toll collection system and devices that may be on board of the vehicle. It is managed by the Traffic Police that plan its activation and operation schedule and issue sanctions when detected by the System.
The Safety Tutor System may operate in two ways:
- by detecting speed at a certain check point, like a speed trap. This use is less frequent and limited to special circumstances
- by monitoring the average speed of vehicles over a road stretch comprised between two points.
The Safety Tutor System in use by Autovie Venete can automatically identify the vehicle’s type (private car, motorbike, lorry, articulated lorry, etc) and number plate, the date and time of passage.
The data acquired automatically by the sensors and the video cameras positioned along the motorway are relayed in real time to the Traffic Police central processing unit, where they are analysed to identify the average speed of the vehicle, corresponding to the ratio between the distance covered and the time required to cover it.
If the average speed of a vehicle exceeds set values, the system automatically records its data and a notification is issued by the Traffic Police if the violation falls outside of a 5% tolerance range.
