Safety barriers are passive protection systems intended to enhance the safety of motorists driving on the motorway, reducing the effects of accidents due to skidding or swerving off the carriage way to a minimum.
The safety barriers are located:
- in the central reservation to prevent vehicles from invading the opposite carriageway;
- in some critical sections of the motorway network;
- on all flyovers.
The barriers are designed to absorb impact flexibly, so that in case of crash the vehicle does not impact the guardrail too hard, invading the opposite carriageway. Safety barriers known as “double wave” are currently being replaced by “triple wave” barriers, that ensure greater technical performance and greater protection.
