The constant increase in traffic and the need to improve safety, the complexity of planned upgrades and the approval and construction of the third lane have led to consultations with other operators, like the Police and road haulage companies, that are interested in road safety in order to identify the most effective measures to be adopted in three main areas: User information; Measures to improve traffic conditions; New investments in technology. This exercise resulted in the drawing up of the Motorway Safety Plan (M.S.P.), consisting of various actions to be undertaken that are all part of the company’s investment plan. In particular, the measures that were identified and adopted include a no-overtaking prohibition for heavy goods vehicles, already in force in some sections of the A4 in the past. As the complex project to complete the third lane evolves, the executive plan was drawn up for the construction of the central reservation on the A4, in the sections Quarto d'Altino - San Donà di Piave and San Donà di Piave – Portogruaro, that was approved at the end of the year and sent to the National Autonomous Road Corporation (ANAS) to undertake the necessary steps. Moreover, feasibility studies were completed to upgrade some entry lanes, both from the service areas and from the station ramps of the A4 and to add new rest areas for HGVs and enlarge existing ones. The M.S.P. also contains other measures, including the acquisition of a system to detect and to calculate the mean travelling times for certain motorway sections, so as to provide this information in real time on the variable message panels, the total renewal of the emergency posts along the whole network managed by Autovie Venete, the addition of five variable message panel systems, the adoption of a monitoring system for the transport of hazardous goods and additional surveillance stations, also to check flyovers
